Dr. Alain Montegut

Dr. Alain Montegut began his professional career as a solo family physician in 1981. Working with his small staff, he delivered true “patient-centered care”. With the advent of managed care, and the changes evolving in health care delivery in the late 1980s, Dr. Montegut served as a founder and the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bowdoin Medical Group.

 Dr. Montegut subsequently became the Medical Director of this group. As a member of the senior management team, he was involved in contract negotiations and contract management with payers; he managed physician performance and utilization management, developed quality improvement programs and managed a preferred referral system with other specialty groups.

 

Since early in his career, Dr. Montegut has been active in medical education. In 2001 became Director, Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program. While at MMC, he also served as the Physician Advisor for the MMC Utilization Review and Referral Management Program related to hospital intersection with insurance health plans. In this role he advised the MMC contracting team, utilization team and claims department in their work with payers and the medical staff.

 

In 2005, Dr. Montegut was selected as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Family Medicine. In this capacity he was intimately involved with the process of certification and maintenance of certification for family physicians. This included the development of programs through which medical groups and institutions could integrate their quality improvement programs into the maintenance of certification process.

 

For almost two decades, Dr. Montegut had also provided primary health care reform consultations internationally. In 1989 he began a six year relationship with the USSR/Russian Ministry of health to consult on the development of the first Family Medicine residency Training Program and its clinic. In 1995 he began his 20 year relationship with the Ministry of Health, Vietnam and the medical universities to assess primary care, develop, implement and train specialists in Family Medicine. In 2007, he was recruited to the Boston University to establish the Global Health Primary Care Initiative. He brought together a consulting group from several disciplines to provide assistance to governments and institutions seeking to develop primary care based health delivery systems. Working in Russia, South East Asia and the Middle East, Dr. Montegut has assisted in the development of education programs for family physicians, the development of primary care group practices, outpatient quality improvement projects based on chronic disease management and the development of Family Medicine based integrated health systems. In 2012, Dr. Montegut was recognized for his work with the prestigious Medal of Honor for the Health Of the People of Vietnam.

 

In 2010, Dr. Montegut returned to the private sector with an opportunity to create a medical group integrated with health plans as the Vice President for Primary Care Development, Martins Point Health Care. In this capacity, he developed the leadership and management structure for the new group, developed the professional assessment system, developed the quality management system. Now as the Senior Practice Medical Director he is engaged on a day to day basis using Lean transformation to accelerate the changes needed for practice.The nine health centers are all Level III NCQA recognized Patient Centered Medical Homes.

 

Dr. Montegut understands the practice of medicine and patient expectations. His professional experiences have allowed him to develop a unique set of skills. He is capable in physician leadership and understands the organizational management of physician led groups. He is an advocate for primary care, but understands the needs for the development of sound relationships with specialty care providers. He understands the value and importance of providing patients with high quality, cost-effective health care through a team approach based on a foundation of communication and trust.
